Chronic Bliss was recorded for the most part in my new home of San Francisco at Square Peg Recording (with my pal Paul Scriver). Most of the musicians are from here. A portion of the tracking was done at my Cave Way studio in Topanga Canyon (Southern California), with musicians from the area.

Here are far too brief descriptions of the musicians:

Peter Valsamis : drums> From Montreal, Peter composes music of his own, plays drums with didgeridoo player Stephen Kent (formerly Trance Mission) on the road in Europe while I send him e-mail's begging to play with me, is a real sweetheart, plays wickedly fast Haitian beats.

Mike Silverman : upright acoustic and electric bass > Plays 8 nights a week in the Bay Area (San Francisco). He is the infamous 'That One Guy', heads 'The FabulousHedgehogs'- a twisted rockabilly, punk, funk, jazz soup, "Slyde 5" - jazz, and some Tango gig. He plays jazz festivals and eats just about anything. Mike spins dreidels, and wrestles.

Rob Burger : Hammond organ, Wurlitzer > Rob plays with 'The Tin Hat Trio' and 'Orange Symphonete' with Matthew Brubeck (Dave's kid). At the session, his nails were painted and he flipped through a copy of Details magazine in about 30 seconds while the tape was being cued up.

Chris Frumkin : piano > No, it's not "Frumpkin", it's "Frumkin". A very nice boy. He lives in Chicago now and is getting married soon if he hasn't already. Really killed some life into "Cry Softly".

Christian Teele: percussion > The living Buddha himself. Having nothing to do with corpulence, as the Buddha description might imply, he's a kind old soul living with his wife in Colorado. (Might have a gig with Kitaro - my favorite rock star.)

Paul Scriver : tenor & alto saxophones, keyboards, programming > Paul and I produced the album together. He recorded and mixed the thing. Leads 'Neomythic', a San Francisco based band playing, "psychedelic soul". He also has a studio project called 'Better Daze' with DJ Andrew Jervis (of 'Bugs').

Calder Spanier : alto saxophone > Played with 'The Charlie Hunter Quartet', wrote his own material, had a beautiful heart and left us way too soon.

Rich Armstrong : trumpet & flugelhorn > Great , extreeeeemly busy musician in the Bay Area. Has toured (as still is) with Michelle Shocked . He's also in 'Neomythic' with Paul Scriver.

John Gove : trombone > John is nice.

Josh Segal : violin & viola > Los Angeles based multi-instrumentalist plays tennis, plays violin with Joan Baez, and is in 'The Borrowers', a fabulous ensemble.

Jenifer Freebairn : backing vocals > Jen is an LA based songwriter and sings like a mofo. Great material. Be on the lookout. A real fiend for discovering new music.

Omega : backing vocals > Omega makes me laugh. She's the powerhouse singer for 'Neomythic', the San Francisco based "psychedelic soul" group. Omega's fantasy is to travel around the world in a small canoe, equipped only with a microphone and a smile.

Maia Sharp : backing vocals > Maia has a great album (well two actually - only one is available commercially) on Ark 21 Records (Miles Copeland's new label). Maia was a 1997 Gavin Triple-A Radio Award Nominee For New Artist of the Year alongside Matchbox 20, Beth Orton, Abra Moore, and Whiskey Town. Her album is called Hardly Glamour. Go get it. (Mitch T. did the album photography.) Maia has written songs with Carol King, Chuck Cannon & Soraya.

Mitch Tobias : guitars, lead & back up vocals, piano, other things with keys > Loves trees, complex harmony and simple pleasures.
